Kashbah Ouled Abdelrahim 1864 - Ouarzazate, Morocco
Located in the heart of Tafilalet, the Ksar Ouled Abdelhlim is the ideal place to discover the history, culture and art of living of the region.
He is the only Sultanian ksar in the region where Moulay Rachid fils and khalfa of Sultan Alaouite Mohammed Ben Abderrahmane stayed.
Tafilalet is also known for its cinematographic vocation as well as its proximity to the mythical dunes of Merzouga (35 Kms).
North of ksar Abhar stands between meanders of palm trees and clay, one of the most imposing ksars of Tafilalet: Ksar Ouled Abdelhalim.
Although the fortress of Ouled Abdelhlim was founded in the 14th century by the sons of Abdelhalim Ibn Abu Ali, rebel Merinid prince who captured Sijilmassa, it was completely rebuilt in 1846 during the reign of Moulay Abderrahmane ben Hicham.
His son Sidi Mohamed ben Abderrahman ascended the throne in 1859 and made it the residence of his son Moulay Rachid khalifat of the sultan on Tafilalet. It was its administrative, judicial seat and the place of war council. Currently, the ksar, despite its notable deterioration, still retains indelible vestiges of these three functions: the Riad, the stable (arms depot) and the arsenal.
Ouled Abdelhalim, a ksar composed of several fortified enclosures:
• External enclosure: the block with the stables and the slaves’ accommodation. It is an open space accessible to subjects to request audience
• 2nd enclosure: the bilad where the families of the sheriffs lived. Reduced space housing the mosque and accessible to eminent personalities.
• 3rd enclosure: the palace proper where the caliph and his relatives resided, in the most protected area and whose structure follows the urban model with the four lounges around a patio and galleries at the extremes of a garden which had a fountain in the middle.
A palace clearly influenced by Andalusian architecture: Completely closed to the outside, the spaces are structured around patios, axes and symmetries.
• Dar Lakbira patio: Large with arcades giving access to the outbuildings of the Sultanian family. Currently in ruins.
• Garden at the north end of the palace: Structured by four flowerbeds and a central fountain, with two large and tall rooms at its ends
• Dar El Ghizlan patio: Square and small patio, with several neighboring rooms in ruins
